The symposium has been postponed.

As everyone knows, the new coronavirus is sporadic throughout Japan. At this point, there is no rapid diagnosis method of this virus, no effective medicine, and no vaccine has been developed. The executive committee members have decided to postpone the meeting.
We will inform to all about the renewal schedule when the committee decides it.

Yours sincerely,

Takane Katayama

The original message

The International Symposium on Bifidobacterium Research

November 2019

Bifidobacterium spp. was isolated from breast-fed infant stools by Henri Tissier in 1899 and has been recognized as an important symbiont due to the accumulating evidence of its health benefits. Nonetheless, how bifidobacteria are acquired by newborn and dominate the microbiota of the breastfed infant guts and how they establish a symbiotic host-microbe relationship with humans, have remained unanswered until relatively recently. In other words, gaining mechanistic insights into these questions has long been considered challenging. However, the recent advance of omics technologies represented by next-generation sequencing and metabolomics, as well as the development of the genetic techniques for manipulating bifidobacterial genomes, has enabled us to address these fundamental questions from the microbe side.
Therefore, in order to exchange information, stimulate partnership, and share the latest knowledge among researchers who are actively engaged in bifidobacterial research, we will hold an International Symposium on Bifidobacterium Research. The slogan of this first symposium is “A NEW ERA OF BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN BIFIDOBACTERIA.” At this symposium, we will have keynote lectures and invited lectures from prominent, pioneering researchers in this field.
I encourage the participation of not only researchers, but also students and company employees who are interested in bifidobacterial biology. I look forward to meeting you at the symposium.

Yours sincerely,

Takane Katayama
